Last mile solutions: A pivotal key to positive transformations of survivors of gender based violence including trafficking

Human trafficking and gender based violence by its very nature is both a complex & a deeply entrenched social evil in our world. A comprehensive solution is not easily achieved but neither is it completely impossible. Unlike, other social problems, human trafficking cannot be addressed with a one-dimensional approach. Also, it often takes a backseat to other causes like child education, nutrition and health, etc. The limitation in attracting bigger funders to the cause and the additional legal & bureaucratic hassles has many social practitioners shy away from tackling this complex issue.

However, neither was the size of the problem a hurdle or the complexity of the problem, a concern when Kshamata was born. Having seen the systemic gaps in the rehabilitation process of trafficked survivors, it was the desperate plea of a young survivor rescued repeatedly that acted as the catalyst for Bharathy, who worked closely with survivors, agencies & the government in rescuing trafficked survivors.

Realising the acute need to plan & implement comprehensive solutions to avoid re-victimisation, Bharathy set-out to build a model which would encompass last mile solutions in a tangible way. So, when Kshamata was founded, it was a natural extension for its social enterprise, Kshamata Unlimited to be formally inaugurated as well a few years later.

Kshamata today has become instrumental in imparting life skills & training for hundreds of survivors and is working with many more outside the institution walls. Kshamata Unlimited on the other hand, has income generation opportunities to a few hundreds of women & is well on its way to employ a few survivors.
